Plymouth Argyle fans all asking the same questions about Wayne Rooney

There is no doubt that Wayne Rooney is one of the biggest names in English football, but what have the Green Army made of his potential appointment as head coach of Plymouth Argyle? The 38-year-old would become the fourth successive Scouser to be Pilgrims boss, succeeding Ryan Lowe, Steven Schumacher and Ian Foster, but by far the most notable name given what he has achieved in the game.

Rooney’s 253 goals for Manchester United made him their all-time record goalscorer and he won 16 major trophies during his 13 years at Old Trafford. His 53 goals from 120 England games also made him the country’s record goalscorer before that record was taken by Harry Kane.

But great players don’t always make great managers and Rooney’s managerial record is less remarkable. He won 24 or 85 games in charge of Derby County, losing 39 and only 16 of 65 at DC United in the MLS, losing 30. A 15 game spell in charge of Birmingham City this season saw him win only twice, losing nine, giving him an overall win percentage of 25%.

We looked at social media site X, formerly Twitter, to gauge the reaction of Argyle supporters to the news that Rooney could be coming to Home Park.

Ben (@Ben48037650) - I hope Argyle dont sign Rooney, if Rooney is the manager our club will be in the media a lot and we will have eyes on us, we will not be used to it and we wont do well as a club if that happens. We need to go about things quietly and lowkey, its for us worked so far....

Steve Oliver (@steviebwoy) - Really hope it isn’t true. Surely there’s someone else more suited to the role!? His credentials are horrific!

Michael Charlick (@mikecharlick) - Rooney would be @Argyle’s Liz Truss moment. Lettuce pray it’s not true...

Toby Gostling (@TobyGostling) - It proves just how f***ing awful Rooney’s managerial reputation and record is, that a fan base the size of ours doesn’t want one of the biggest names and best players this country has produced anywhere near our head coach role. I pray it’s been leaked to see the reaction.

Daniel Waldron (@WheresWaldy) - Glass half full as always. Rooney will have influence when it comes to new signings. Sadly that’s the only positive I can see as of yet. I’d like to think someone involved with the club can read the room & see it would be a negative appointment from day 1 for our fanbase

Oi (@kandimaz) - You know what i just gonna go for the ride. Rooney gets the players he wants to fit his system a pre season as well, maybe it can work out. Lets just see how it goes. Rooney could lead us to the Premier League lol

Strictlyplymouth (@MrsFoxtrotwhisk) - I’m convinced it’s to do with investment. Rooney as a ‘figurehead’ could work. We’d need an excellent coaching team coming with him

Pilgrim Pete’s son (@glynnHerbie) - I understand people hating that the manager is more than likely gonna be Rooney. However, I have so much trust in Dewsnip still. Some people can have a go at him and the owner and slag ‘em off. But Dewsnip wouldn’t be doing it if it weren’t the best for the club.

Michael Lucas (@MrLuco1988) - I am all in for Rooney! He will have contacts, attract players, potential investors and will raise Argyle’s profile hugely. Think it’s really exciting potential appointment. Yes it could go wrong, but so can any appointment. Surely everyone has to get behind him!

John G (@snappyhappychap) - Read the room @Argyle - Plymouth can have a circus at Central Park whenever it wants one, but we don’t need this one….

Aaron Press (@Aaronpress1) - Awful feeling when you wake up and remember Wayne Rooney to Argyle wasn’t just a daft, unrealistic dream. It feels like relegation but 12 months early

Jack jones (@jackjonesxx) - You can just see it now next season loads of Manchester United shirts being worn at home game next season. if he didn’t have the Birmingham job on his CV from last year I would be optimistic but I can not understand why we would take another BIG BIG gamble on Rooney, I would love for it to work out and be proven wrong but I can’t see it

Argyle Memes (@ArgyleMemes) - Feeling incredibly optimistic about the possible Rooney appointment. It will attract big investment and he will no doubt attract some fantastic talent in the summer. We’ll worry about the 26% win rate another time. We can always bring Foster back in Jan 2025.

The Fat Janner (@FatJanner) - Pros Big name can attract investment, Former world class striker can teach our attackers a thing or 3, He may actually suit our system. Cons Wage demands, Can he work on a tight budget? Will he move down here? Last chance to prove himself

Jak Ball (@Jakfirst) - I don’t bother commenting on all the rumours because most of it is crap! But this Wayne Rooney stuff is gathering speed and I really do not like it. Surely not? Jesus Christ!

One Team in Devon (@OneTeamInDevon) - I’m not a big business guy like SH but I’ve hired a fair few people for mine. The ones that have question marks and red flags NEVER work out. They never just turn it around. This is a massive risk and not even sure the payoff is that big.

Nik – (@NikArgyle) - Some rollercoaster this.
