A pub boss was left red-faced for a patron after checking the security tapes.

Steve, who runs The Southport Tavern on London Street, took to Facebook to express his dismay after a plug-in air freshener went missing at the weekend. He said: "Today I'm upset!! We try and keep high standards in the pub for everyone that visits!!

"This morning the cleaner informed me that a plug in airfreshner had gone missing. After reviewing CCTV I see a lady who comes into our pub regularly put it in her bag.

"It's not about the money I'm actually embarrassed for her.

"If your reading this I hope your house smells nicer than you are as a person. Please remember our pub covered by CCTV."

In the comments under the post, Steve added: "I'm honestly in shock. I would have let her have it if she asked. They ain't cheap. I'm going to have some fun with this."

The post, which included a snapshot of the woman seemingly swiping the air freshener, garnered support from customers, with one commenting: "As you say, it's not about the money, it's the principle of it mate. Doesn't matter how you look at it, it's theft, pure and simple."

Another wrote: "Oh dear me, how embarrassing!" while a third said: "It's so sad."

Another remarked: "If it’s not nailed down they will take it" while Kokomo Coffee and Wine Bar agreed, posting: "If it's not nailed down...."
