Race Across the World was packed full of drama on Wednesday evening with Betty and James nearly out the race with lost passport drama, Stephen and Viv getting lost and more.

Viewers of the BBC show were left fearing multiple teams will run out of money before the last checkpoint in Lombok, an idyllic Indonesian island paradise, is in sight.

Social media was awash with fans voicing their concerns for the Race Across the World contestants running out of money before the end of the show. Among the comments, one viewer asked: "What happens if everyone runs out of money? #raceacrosstheworld."

One concerned person penned: "#RaceAcrossTheWorld are Alfie & Owen even aware of how much money they have left? Taxis here there & everywhere but at mo only 18% budget left!"

Additionally another added: "Feeling like Betty and James will run out of money before the end of this race #RaceAcrossTheWorld."

Another said: "I really hope Betty and James don't run out of money #raceacrosstheworld."

Someone else wrote: "Will this be the first time all the teams run out of money before the end of the race? #raceacrosstheworld."

Plus, viewers said: "Betty and James only have 20% left i hope they manage to work and get money. #raceacrosstheworld."

The siblings start the leg with 20% of their budget remaining. Just 11 minutes into the episode, Betty and James run their money down to just 18% of the budget with the brother and sister going island hopping as they left Thailand behind.

While they do a job along the way, they get into trouble again. The brother and sister get behind on the race as a result of Betty losing her bumbag with her passport on a bus. Luckily Betty got it back and the siblings could continue with the race, even though it had put them at the back of the pack. However, this turn could prove costly for the siblings.

Towards the end of the episode, we see them get a train and then finally an overnight direct bus to the checkpoint in Bukittinggi. However, we don't get an update on their budget at the end of the show which left fans even more concerned for their money.

James told Yahoo the siblings didn't have a strategy when it came to their budget while competing on the BBC show.

Elsewhere, best friends Alfie and Owen have blown a significant amount of money on this leg through Malaysia to the end of the journey in Indonesia. Their budget had started out relatively healthily at 30%, the same as Eugenie and Isabel.

The friends make significant process in the race as they are the only team to reach the checkpoint in episode six, making them first again. It showed them to be fierce contenders for the £20,000 prize fund. However, it came at a big cost as their budget had dwindled to just 18% sparking worries on social media.

Alfie told Yahoo that the budget was like a "constant overhanging cloud" and at times he was "pleasantly surprised" at how well they were doing with their money when watching it back with the rest of the country.

Mother and daughter pairing Eugenie and Isabel are racing to be the next contestants to get to the checkpoint, having just crossed with Stephen and Viv on their journey. They were keen to get ahead in the race as they had fallen to last place when arriving at the paradise islands of Phi Phi in Thailand.

They started out the leg in episode six with 30% of the budget. However, by the end of the episode, their funds had begun to take a knock as they had only 23% remaining.

The mother-and-daughter pairing have been more cautious with their spending since the first leg where Eugenie and Isabel blew a third of the budget. Eugenie told Yahoo about how they realised their mistake and started to wise up as the race went on. She said: "We did hemorrhage in Japan, but we realised we can start to reap more of a balance when it comes to seeing the country as well as working as well and not blowing so much of the budget."

Stephen and Viv are in the best place with their budget at the end of episode six but they have also spent a lot of money on this leg. They went from having 36% of their budget to just 27% remaining and while this may sound low, it is the highest out of the four teams.

At the beginning of the episode, they begun their journey to leave Thailand and they worked in a bar on one of the islands. Viv persuaded Stephen to spend more money on a nice room with an ensuite which amused fans online.

Later, they splashed cash to go out of their way to see the 17th prettiest street in the world in Malaysia. However, it doesn't pay off with Viv missing the pretty street after they went on a "wild goose chase". Stephen complained they got "lost" and "sulked" in George Town. Viv accepted that she would have to google the street when they got home from the race.

However, they did manage to see some nice murals. Stephen admitted: "This was Viv's choice, it was a bit out of the way, but actually I've really enjoyed it. I've relaxed, had a cracking day. It's genuinely been worth it."

The episode ended with the retired couple racing towards the checkpoint.

Viv told Yahoo that they controlled their budget by limiting what they spent on food. She said: "The only thing we had complete control over was how much we spent on food. I think we must have spent the least amount of food, certainly in Japan and in Korea, because we just lived on bread and bananas. We didn't try any of the local food."
