Rail passengers are being urged to delay travelling today after a landslip on the Brighton mainline.

The landslip was first reported in the early hours of this morning and has now been confirmed by Network Rail workers on the line between Hassocks and Burgess Hill.

Trains are being cancelled or revised, with some from Brighton to London being diverted via Horsham and the west coastway or via Lewes along the east coastway.

A spokesman for Govia Thameslink Railway, the operator in charge of Southern and Thameslink services, said: "At this time, advice is to allow plenty of extra time for any journeys, or if possible, to delay travelling until later today when the situation is more stable.

"Teams are working to assess what services can run, but you can expect a number of alterations to services.

"There will be a limited number of trains able to run directly though to Brighton.

"Services, where possible, will divert via Horsham and the West Coast, or via Lewes.

"You can also expect services to terminate and restart earlier in their journeys, such as Haywards Heath or Three Bridges for example."

Currently, direct trains from Brighton to London Victoria are cancelled until midday.

Disruption on the railway is expected until the end of the day.
