What did you miss?

Robbie Williams had planned to ditch Ayda Field Williams at a party after they initially failed to hit it off during their first meeting, but the night took a dramatic turn when she ended up nursing him back to health.

In his Netflix self-titled docuseries, Robbie Williams, the musician opened up about some of the darkest moments in his life and shared never-before-seen footage behind the scenes of his star-studded career spanning 30 years.

From the first night they met, his wife of 13 years Ayda has always been supporting the mega star which has created their strong foundation for their marriage.

What, how and why?

Williams googled 'Ayda Field' when a mutual friend suggested they should go on a date and the couple decided to meet.

But the date didn’t go according to plan as when the Angels hitmaker invited his love interest over after she had been to a party, the pair initially failed to strike up a connection.

Williams remembered: “She came over to my house after being at a party. I just saw off my dealer that I was sleeping with at the time.”

Remembering being sat in darkness, Field was shocked by the singer’s house. She said: “The house is completely f***ing dark. No candles. I’m like this is f***ing weird. So we’re sitting there, we have nothing in common.”

Williams recalled: “I was like, ‘Oh this is not working out. I better take her back to the party where she has come from.’”

But this was news to Field who said: “Unbeknownst to me, Rob was actually going to ditch me at this party! I guess we start, maybe because we surrendered to the fact we were not each other’s person, and this was a total mess. We were just completely loose with each other and we were saying funny s**t in the car. And I was like, ‘Oh he’s funny!’”

It was at this point that Williams decided he would stop in at the party after all. “I was like, ‘Oh I’ll come in for five minutes,’” he said.

Sparks begun to fly between the pair as they laughed and enjoyed each other’s company.

Field said: “And there was just this moment when we were laughing. I cannot even tell you what was happening, the universe opened up.”

Williams agreed: “I had this moment where I felt like I had known her forever.”

The singing sensation then disappeared to the toilet but left Field waiting a long time. “I’m waiting, I’m like, ‘God is he taking a dump?’”

Williams admitted: “I then did some coke. I got this tic.”

Field decided to investigate to find out what was happening and she was surprised when she found the star. “There he was, pacing, clucking, I was like, we gotta go,” she said.

The night took a different turn as Field went home with Williams and looked after him. “She ended up coming home and nursing me,” he said.

Looking back, Field said: “We stayed up talking. He explained he had been sober for a very long time. He had just relapsed. It was like my entryway into addiction…

“I remember that being very scary. I was really liking this person a lot. Here was this incredibly troubled soul, a rock star in another country and f***ed up about it and a complete mess and so my person. Like my f***ing soulmate.”

They would go onto build strong marriage, have four children and live as a family in West Kensington in London. The rest is history.

The docuseries gave Williams the space to reflect on his well-documented battle with addiction and rehab stints over his life.

Plus, Williams opened up about falling in love with his wife Ayda as he described her as his “solace, safety and sanctuary”. “She doesn’t take herself too seriously, she’s smart and beautiful,” he said. “She sees the best in me and I see the best in her.”

Teddy

Their eldest child, daughter Theodora, known as Teddy, made a number of cameo appearances in the docuseries including a sweet moment where she sings Angels.

The parents don't show their children's faces on Instagram but Teddy made an appearance in the docuseries.

Tender scenes see Teddy interrupt her dad Williams while he’s filming his piece to camera and they have an emotional conversation.

He told her: “Listen, I’ve just probably reached the most traumatic moment in my life… You’ll be able to watch it. You’ll be able to watch the documentary when you’re much older.”

Take That

As for his career, Williams didn’t shy away from his resentment and jealousy of Gary Barlow when they were in Take That.

However, in the years that followed, he said: “There was a reason I left Take That so angry, my anger has dissipated and gone now.”

Rejoining Take That in 2010 really helped the rockstar get his foot back on the showbiz ladder after he took time away from the spotlight to heal his addiction demons.

He said: “Rejoining Take That really helped me, propelled me back in, helped me be camouflaged in public but seen. Rejoining Take That was a vital part of my journey to where I am now.”

He also discussed his past loves Nicole Appleton and Geri Halliwell.

But most importantly, Williams revealed there is a happy ending for him. “There is a happy ending for me anyway,” he said. “I guess the god-shaped hole has been filled with four kids and a wife. I'm a dad of four and a loving husband. I'm on my way to being really happy.”
