The couple, who have been dating since 2018 and welcomed baby daughter Gia earlier this year, attended the award show in New York City, where De Niro's movie Killers of the Flower Moon was honored with the show's historical icon and creator tribute.
De Niro and Chen sat with De Niro's costar Lily Gladstone inside the event. De Niro, 80, gave a speech to present a tribute to the movie on behalf of its cast, during which he claimed someone had edited out a portion of his speech that criticized former President Donald Trump without De Niro's permission and removed it from the teleprompter. He read his unedited speech from his phone.
“I just want to say one thing: The beginning of my speech was edited, cut out. I didn’t know about it. And I want to read it," De Niro said during his appearance on stage.
He suggested event organizers and Apple, the studio that produced Killers of the Flower Moon, were responsible for cutting parts of his speech. (Reps for the Gotham Awards and Apple did not respond to PEOPLE's requests for comment.)
"So I'm going to say these things, but to Apple, and thank them and all that, Gotham, blah, blah, blah, Apple — I don't feel like thanking them at all for what they did," he said. "How dare they do that, actually, but now I will go to accepting the award for Killers of the Flower Moon."

De Niro and Chen's night out came a little over two weeks after a verdict was reached in a gender discrimination case brought against the actor and his company Canal Productions by his ex-assistant, Graham Chase Robinson.
Both De Niro and Chen testified to their relationships with Robinson, 41, during her time working for De Niro and Canal Productions years after both sides filed lawsuits against one another after Robinson's resignation in 2019.
De Niro and Canal Productions alleged that Robinson abused her position to inappropriately use “her employer’s fund for her personal gain." Robinson sued De Niro and Canal Productions for alleged violations of the New York City Human Rights Law, and accused the Oscar winner of gender discrimination and retaliation.
On Nov. 9, a jury in New York City federal court found De Niro not personally liable, though his company Canal Productions was found liable for gender discrimination and retaliation against Robinson. The jury ordered Canal to pay $1.26 million in damages to Robinson.

De Niro and Chen first met while working together on the 2015 movie The Intern. They sparked romance rumors when they were spotted holding hands while vacationing in the South of France.
“It doesn’t get easier,” he told The Guardian of parenting his daughter Gia with Chen in October. “It is what it is. It’s okay. I mean, I don’t do the heavy-lifting. I’m there, I support my girlfriend. But she does the work. And we have help, which is so important."
