Posers are buying – or even HIRING – empty iPhone X boxes so they can pretend they’ve got Apple’s latest must-have gadget.

Entrepreneurs in Russia are selling or renting out their empty boxes so those who can’t afford the real thing can still show off by posting selfies with them online.

The empty iPhone X boxes are fetching as much as £97 (7,500 rubles) online, while people can hire them for long enough to take a photo for around £13 (1,000 rubles).

Apple’s latest addition to its range of tech must-haves, which features facial recognition, was launched globally on November 3, with large queues forming for days outside shops around the world.

While it reportedly only costs £271 to make, the price of a new iPhone X is around £1,000.

Previously, Russian businessmen have hired out luxury trappings from designer clothes and bags to private jets for status seekers to pose with on social media but this is thought to be the first time empty boxes have been rented in this way.

Netizen ‘Sanya’ commented: “Idiots!”, while ‘Yulia Khamrinova’ added: “What is the point of buying an empty iPhone box?”
