Louis Tomlinson left fellow X Factor judge Simon Cowell red-faced after he savaged him for trying to take credit for his act during Saturday night’s live show.

The One Direction star proved he really is the “king of sass” after he silenced Cowell, who claimed he chose the song Say Something by A Great Big World for Tomlinson’s act Brendan Murray, which proved to be a hit with the judges.

Praising Murray for his performance during big band week, Tomlinson said: “Lad you are one of the hardest working people in this competition, you’ve taken a few knocks, you’ve come out fighting. I think that was the perfect song.”

However, it wasn’t long before Cowell jumped in attempting to take credit for the song choice.

Hitting back, Tomlinson said: “Who chose it? I think I chose it actually Simon.”

Cowell then continued: “I thought I chose it.”

However, 26-year-old Tomlinson blasted the music mogul: “No you certainly didn’t choose it.”

Refusing to back down, Cowell mocked: “You don’t remember me calling and suggesting that song?”

But it was Tomlinson that made sure he had the last word, savaging Cowell: “No Simon, no you certainly didn’t.”

Viewers were quick to praise Tomlinson for being the "sass master", on social media.

One user wrote: "I love Louis' sass honestly. #XFactor."

Another commented: "Sass Master from Doncaster IS BACK B****."

A third added: "Louis is being such a bad b****."

Cowell later attempted to take credit for another one of Tomlinson’s acts, Anthony Russell, after claiming he encouraged him to take singing lessons when he first auditioned for the show in 2007.

His comment was met with a disapproving look from Tomlinson and a resounding "boo” from the audience.

Elsewhere, another one of Tomlinson's boys Dalton Harris wowed judges with his powerhouse performance of Beyonce's Listen, earning a standing ovation from all four judges.

The X Factor continues Sunday at 8pm on ITV.
