The impending transformation of the notorious Moor Bridge roundabout in Bulwell has sparked a flurry of opinions from Nottinghamshire Live readers. The roundabout is set to be replaced with traffic signals and bus lanes to improve journey times and prioritise buses, however this decision has been met with mixed reactions from the public.

The roundabout has previously been described as the ‘worst’ in Nottingham and a ‘hotspot’ for accidents. Neighbours in the area have raised concerns over the years as they watched accidents taking place on their doorsteps.

Nottingham City Council has confirmed the major transformation work will begin later this year in Autumn 2024. The transformation is a part of the government-funded Greater Nottingham Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP).

DavidBrock, a reader, expressed relief at the proposed changes, stating: "Long overdue, a police officer was seriously injured here way back in 2007. It has taken them years to do anything. I was recently taken outside onwards when I had priority on the island. The point here is you can be the most careful driver in the world but if you have clowns out there who don't understand the highway code and what give to the right means you'll never win in this situation. I've had to pay for my insurance repair as the other driver failed to report the accident. No there aren't any cameras there and they should put some all over. The next investment is a dashcam but I doubt these catch idiots from the side."

On the other hand, Meanytime1211 criticised the decision as a waste of money. They argued: "So after spending £££££'s destroying Hucknall Road installing a cycle path when the old train line could have easily been modified and tidied up they plan to destroy the rest of the road,... people listen up, this is a waste of your money,"

Artyrog brought up an interesting point by adding: "There was a resident consultation by Nottinghamm City Council in the 70's where it was recommended that a by-pass be taken across the Railway,River Leen & Bestwood Rd on a fly-over towards Redhill Island across farmland. It was shelved & completely forgotten about. The City Council say they have no record of this. It is strange but the same route is now being commenced, in the Autumn 2024, for. Major water pipeline from Strelley Resovoir to Redhill. Also coinciding with this nonsense proposed on Moor Bridge."

JamesMoore questioned: "What is the point of a 24 hour bus lane when the buses don't run 24 hours? And WHERE is the provision for motorcycles??"

Bryanston11 said: "Leave the roundabout as it is. It works albeit some drivers are impatient."

Arnos1 said: "An atrocious junction. Tiny little mini roundabout overrun with aggressive drivers aiming at each other. I’m all for the traffic lights and cameras - it’s the only way to bring these lunatics to heel."

However, Nibbler expressed concern by saying: "Seems no one from the traffic management department has ever been there at rush hour. This will just snarl up traffic back in all three directions but as the motorist isn’t considered at all these days we will just keep paying for these stupid ideas."

Kingie countered with: "Seriously think the worst island is the Boots /Raleigh roundabout on Western Boulevard, it needs a flyover for through traffic, enabling local residents to turn off and get home without a 15-minute wait."

Badman48 said: "I’ve been using this island years and if you’re an experienced driver you shouldn’t have any issues with this, quite simply give way to the right."

In answer to Badman 48, SBB said: "Valid comment, IF other drivers would do the same. Too many do not know right from left and add to the mix far too many cars seem not to be fitted with indicators. Any drivers who might show signs they once read the Highway Code will wonder why they bother because it does not work at Moor Bridge. The new bus-only lanes are not going to help flow."

Atnotts01 suggested: "So they should install red light cameras. Red light jumping is much more dangerous than MINOR speeding."

Robom said: "It just shows how slow this council is to get things done. This roundabout has been a safety issue for years, especially on dark wet nights. I bet they put a camera on the new traffic lights though, bound to make them money."

Lr9 said: "This roundabout has never been a safety issue!! As we are all told - give way to the right, you think putting lights up and a cycle lane and bus lane in is going to make it any better!! It’s going to be worse as through peak times these lights will allow 3/4 cars through maximum!! So yes well done to all of you that can’t drive and use roundabouts you have just screwed Moorbridge. Here one why don’t you all complain about how disgusting the roads are? Absolutely littered with potholes some that you can't even class as a pothole more like a crater!! How about fixing that before sorting a roundabout that is perfectly fine."

Rl said: "Nothing wrong with it, keeps the traffic moving, adding bus lanes cycle lanes and traffic lights only hold the traffic up causing more congestion. The city hospital roundabout is far worse."
