‘Doctor Who’ offered Sean Pertwee a role… but he was forced to say no.

Sean Pertwee’s father was once of the greats of British sci-fi – Jon Pertwee starred in ‘Doctor Who’ as the third Doctor from 1970 until 1974. And it’s no secret that Sean bears more than a slight resemblance to his father. Especially when he don’s the iconic third Doctor’s clothes.

And now it looks as though ‘Doctor Who’ wanted him for an unknown role…

During an interview with the Radio Times, the 52-year-old British actor revealed that he would love a cameo in ‘Doctor Who’… and he was offered a role in last year’s Series 9.

“I’d love to,” he said. “I’d love to.”

“I’ve been asked before,” he added. “I was asked actually last season. I couldn’t do it because of Gotham. I’d love to be in some capacity be involved, as an ode to my father and to Roger Delgado, who was my dad’s best friend, who was the Master.”

But who could Sean Pertwee have played?

A Cameo as a Former-Doctor?

Let’s face it – Sean Pertwee looks a lot like his father. And with a number of older Doctors making a comeback in recent years we have to wonder whether we could have seen another familiar face return to ‘Doctor Who’.

We’ve already had a new mini-adventure from former-Doctor, Paul McGann as well as an appearance from David Tennant in a rather impressive episode with Matt Smith. But could ‘Doctor Who’ have brought back a classic Doctor thanks to Sean Pertwee?

It’s always a possibility… and with Sean Pertwee revealing an uncanny image of himself as the third Doctor, it’s likely that the BBC took notice.

The Son of the Doctor?

Did you know that the Doctor once had a family? He may be known for his galactic gallivanting, but it’s been mentioned in passing that he also once had children… but they apparently died long ago.

“I’ve been a father before,” he told Donna during the episode ‘The Doctor’s Daughter’. “I lost all that a long time ago, along with everything else.”

Unfortunately, their exact fates are unknown… but the first Doctor (played by William Hartnell) is thought to have married, resulting in a whopping thirteen children. In fact, he even travelled along with his granddaughter Susan for a while.

But could any of his children looked like the third Doctor?

Considering all this timey-wimey stuff, it’s a possibility.

Another Character Entirely?

Could Sean Pertwee have been scouted for an entirely different role?

He wouldn’t be the first son-of-a-Doctor to appear on ‘Doctor Who’ in an entirely different role. In fact, in 2014 Michael Troughton (the son of second Doctor, Patrick Troughton) starred as Professor Albert in the Christmas Special, ‘Last Christmas’.

And his brother, David Troughton, also appeared in an episode in 2008.

“It’d be an honour to be involved in something like that,” said Pertwee. “You know, it’s a big thing! Doctor Who’s a massive thing in America now, and also they’re looking to the older Doctors, which I think is really kinda cool. They’re looking back as well, not just forward.”

Looking back as well as forward?

Could that be a hint that he may have appeared as the former-Doctor?

Unfortunately, he never revealed which role he was offered. But who knows – perhaps ‘Doctor Who’ will give Sean Pertwee another chance. And that could mean the return of an old favourite.
