Since the first episode of Apple TV+'s dystopian drama Severance landed on the streamer in 2022, it's been a cult hit. The Ben Stiller series has gained a reputation with viewers as *basically* one of the best series of the decade. High praise, but deserved.

Which is why we're all desperate to get our hands on as much info as possible about the next season. Here's everything we know about Severance series two, from cast and plot info to when you can expect the show to return.

When will Severance season 2 be released?

While nothing has been set in stone, the cast and crew have been teasing the new series, with Andrew Scott - who plays Mark - most recently telling The Hollywood Reporter, "I wish I could tell you and everybody about what’s coming up because it’s going to be so much fun.

"I can’t say a word, but it’ll finally be coming out in the somewhat near future. I can’t wait for everyone to see it. That’s basically it. It was so much fun to make. Your patience doesn’t have to hold on too much longer."

The same week, director Ben Stiller took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to respond to singer SZA's tweet, "Was tryna be polite but I really need a new season of severance right the f*** now", with "Ok ok got it."

Sounds like it might be happening soon!

When did Severance season 2 start production?

Filming started back in October 2022 for the second season, with Apple sharing a tweet which read, "Every time you find yourself here, it’s because you chose to come back. #Severance Season 2 filming has started."

In April 2023, fans were speculating that there had been a fallout behind the scenes on Severance, causing a delay to production. Something director Ben Stiller denied, taking to X (formerly known as Twitter) to write, "No one’s going to the break room. We’re on the same really slow schedule we’ve always been on. Same target air date we’ve always had. Love our fans and each other and we all are just working to make the show as good as possible."

Production was then delayed by the SAG-Aftra strikes of 2023, before resuming in January 2024. Sharing the news, Ben Stiller wrote, " Back to work. #SEVERANCE" alongside a photo of Adam Scott playing Mark, running through the corridors.

When was Severance season two confirmed?

Before the dramatic season one finale had aired, the show had been confirmed for a second series.

Director Ben Stiller confirmed the news in a post on Instagram in April 2022, before telling Variety, "It's really exciting to see the response from people who are loving the show, and the level of fan engagement. It has been a long road bringing Severance to television. I first read Dan's pilot over five years ago. It has always been a multi-season story and I'm really happy we get to continue it. I'm grateful to our partners at Apple TV+ who have been behind it the whole way. Praise Kier!"

Who will be in the Severance season two cast?

At this point season one left us on such a cliffhanger it does feel like more characters could be introduced to clear up the whole *thing*. However, along with confirmation that season two is actually happening we also got the great news that the core characters will be returning:

  • Adam Scott as Mark

  • Britt Lower as Helly

  • John Turtorro as Irving

  • Zach Cherry as Dylan

  • Patricia Arquette as Mrs Cobel

  • Tramell Tillman as Milchek

Excitingly, new cast members are also joining for the second season, including:

  • Game of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie

  • The Walking Dead's Merritt Wever

What's going to happen in Severance season two?

The whole thing is such a wild ride, it's hard to know. However, what we can do is think about where we left off, and that might give us some clues.

Series one ends with Mark, Irving and Helly finally managing to get their innies into the outside world, where all three of them learn some shocking truths. Helly discovers her Eagen heritage, Irving finds out that the Lumon employee he's in love with is married and Mark finds out the wife he thought was dead is actually his coworker. These events (and a load more drama) had us picking our jaws off the floor at the end of season one.

So, what's going to happen in season 2? Well, according to Stiller we were right when we said that was a bit of a thing to unpick.

"Obviously, that’s a huge question and something that really is important to be dealt with because their whole perception of the world has been altered by having this glimpse," he told Esquire in a recent interview. "That’s going to be a lot of what the second season has to deal with—a big part of the engine of the second season’s beginning."

He added that we'll also likely continue to explore the budding relationship between Mark and Helly, but with the added complications that came with that season 1 finale.

"With Innie Mark, we’re starting to root for him and Helly, but now we also want to root for Outie Mark to find his wife," he explained. "That’s an interesting juxtaposition and conflict we’ll explore in the second season."
