Shops cordoned off after workman suffers head injury

A town centre shopping area was cordoned off after a man suffered a workman suffered a serious head injury.

Emergency services were called to Newtown Gardens in Kirkby town centre at around 6.35am today, Tuesday, June 25. It followed a report a man had been injured by a metal gate.

The man, who is in his 20s, has been taken to hospital with a head injury. Merseyside Police said the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been notified. Eyewitnesses claimed the gate fell on the man while he was working.

However, a spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service said the man fell and hit his head on the gate.

Pictures taken at the scene showed a large cordon near to the William Hill branch in the town centre. Officers could be seen guarding the cordon and forensic officers were also at the scene.

A high-vis jacket could also be seen on the floor and the metal gate appeared to be leaning on some scaffolding.
