Simon Cowell calls Spice Girls 'singing dogs' at Britain's Got Talent
Could Simon Cowell still be bitter about not signing the Spice Girls back in the day? It seems that way, as the music mogul has reportedly insulted them during this year’s Britain’s Got Talent auditions.
According to the Daily Star, Cowell slammed an auditioning act by comparing them to the ‘singing dogs’ Spice Girls.
The auditioning act of four reportedly attempt to impress the BGT judge line-up by dressing up as dogs during their singing audition. To which Cowell reportedly responds with:
“There have been a few singing dogs over the years. Have you seen the Spice Girls?”
Spice Girls infamously passed on signing with Simon Cowell for rival mogul Simon Fuller, and of course went on to become one of the most successful music groups of all time.
Cowell admitted to The Tonight Show host Jay Leno back in 2009 that not signing the girl group was ‘probably my biggest mistake’ of his career.
“I offered them a deal, but they didn’t want to sign to me, so that kind of hurt at the time,” he elaborated.
Victoria Beckham said otherwise when she guest judged American Idol in 2010. Beckham claimed it was in fact Cowell who had turned down the group.
“He is the only man in the music industry who turned down the Spice Girls – and said we would never work!” Beckham said.
Britain’s Got Talent is expected to return this spring on ITV. This will feature Ant McPartlin’s hotly anticipated return to television after taking almost a year away following his drink-driving arrest and stint at rehab.
Meanwhile the Spice Girls, minus Victoria Beckham, will embark on a UK stadium tour this summer.
