Sinkhole opens up in middle of Tunbridge Wells street

A sinkhole has opened up in a road in Tunbridge Wells. The hole in the middle of one carriageway is in Culverden Down.

Kent County Council's Kent Highways team has erected barriers, weighted with sandbags, around the gaping hole, along with a traffic cone and a sign.

The Tunbridge Wells resident who took these photographs pointed out there were three schools one road away. KentLive approached Kent County Council for a comment at just before noon today.

Culverden Down is accessed at one end from the busy A26, and the entrance to the secondary school Bennett Memorial Diocesan School is there.

The average price of properties sold in Culverden Down during the past 12 months was £367,500, according to Rightmove. Overall, sold prices in Culverden Down during the past year were 48 per cent down on the previous year and 64 per cent down on the 2010 peak of £1,008,500, said the property site.

A spokesperson for Kent County Council said: "The sink hole in Culverden Down, Tunbridge Wells was first reported to our out of hours team on May 14. The site was assessed and found there is no water leak. We were out yesterday (21 May) to undertake the reinstatement of the site."
