'They have something to lose' - Farke's Dortmund reminder shows Ipswich can still crumble

Upsets at the 11th hour of a football season can happen and Daniel Farke need only cast his mind back less than 12 months to a famous example in his homeland. While the German was taking charge of his final Borussia Monchengladbach match, the Bundesliga title was being surrendered 50 miles away.

Borussia Dortmund, where Leeds United's manager first began making a name for himself at the helm of their reserves between 2015 and 2017, were in top spot at the start of the final day of the season. Edin Terzic’s side knew they simply had to beat ninth-placed Mainz to deny Bayern Munich an 11th consecutive championship.

Bayern, away at mid-table Cologne, would take an early lead before Mainz then went in front at Dortmund to really start nerves jangling. Sebastien Haller missed a 19th-minute penalty to make it 1-1 and just five minutes later their visitors would be 2-0 up, leaving the leaders a mountain to climb.

Dortmund eventually found the net in the 69th minute to make it 2-1, but a 96th-minute equaliser would not be enough to deny Bayern, who beat Cologne in the 89th minute with a Jamal Musiala winner. Ahead of his own slim final-day opportunity, Farke was asked if he could take inspiration from such Bundesliga drama.

“Yes, not so much of a defeat of Borussia Dortmund,” he said. “I was in charge for Borussia Dortmund a few years ago. I also like Bayern Munich a lot.

“To be honest, I've got also a pretty good relationship with Edin Terzic. I also felt for him because it was heartbreaking for them. On the other hand, I was also quite happy for Thomas Tuchel.

“I have a really good connection with him as well and we know each other for such a long time. I was also delighted for him that he won the title.

“Yes, but this is also what happens sometimes. Everyone expected Bayern Munich to win last season.

“Last game day Borussia Dortmund was in the best position. First time during this season that they have something to lose. Yes, and they lost it. It doesn't always happen.

“It's not always a repeat of this. We are right now in a situation where we would take advantage of it if it really happens, but first of all, we have to concentrate on us.

“In order to be on it and to be back to our best possible behaviour and also hope if any are possible to win the game then to hope for such a late twist, but a late twist is definitely possible, that's definitely for sure.”

Farke is hoping Ipswich Town crumble in the same way Dortmund did when they know they have so much on the line. Can virtually-relegated Huddersfield Town offer any kind of resistance in Suffolk?
