ONE OF the main roads into Newport has reopened after a day out of action because a car crashed into a telegraph pole.

The upper section of Staplers Road from the Pan roundabout was closed during the early hours of this morning (Wednesday).

A Ford Fiesta collided with the pole, causing it to fall onto the road and a loss of power to about 40 homes in the immediate area.

A team of Scottish and Southern Electricity engineers, linemen and labourers spent the majority of the day removing and replacing the telegraph pole and restoring power to affected homes.

Emergency road closures were put in place by Island Roads at the request of the police, which was investigating the crash.

No arrests were made and no one was charged with a driving offence, but the car had careered more than 50m down the road before coming to rest on the verge, badly damaged, following the collision.

The road was reopened this evening, but SSE has traffic lights in place while some work continues.
