New store opens in Churchill Square - brand looks to 'revolutionise the way we shop'

A “department store for second-hand style” is set to open in Churchill Square aiming to “revolutionise the way we shop”.

Charity Super.Mkt will take over the former Lakeland site in the Brighton shopping centre.

It aims to be a sustainable fashion store by partnering with charities to provide second-hand clothes.

The shop, founded just over a year ago, says it has so far re-sold more than 275,000 items of clothing and made over £2 million in sales at sites in London, Manchester and Edinburgh.

It is the latest opening in Churchill Square as the shopping centre continues to welcome new outlets following the takeover by Ingka, the group behind Ikea which plans to open the latest iteration of the Swedish shopping giant in Brighton.

Maria Chenoweth, co-founder of Charity Super.Mkt, said: "Our unique retail concept provides an opportunity for shoppers to embrace sustainable fashion while supporting deserving charities.

“It is also great to be back in the city where the charity I head, Traid, launched its trailblazing upcycling concept Traid Remade almost decades ago.”

Co-founder Wayne Hemingway said: “We know that Brighton will welcome the concept because the city has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to the issues that we are bringing to the fore and the values that the brand upholds.

“There really is something for everyone from affordable designer pieces, to vintage to good quality high street items at cost-of-living crisis prices.”

The pop-up store, which opens on Thursday, July 4, until July 25, plans to offer second-hand clothing with sales benefiting charities such as Shelter, Cancer Research and Age UK.

The shop says it has diverted nearly 80 tonnes of clothing from heading to landfill since first opening in 2023.

The brand works on a pop-up store model, opening stores for as little as three months at a time.

Currently, Charity Super.mkt has stores open in Bristol, Reading, Oxford, Glasgow and London.
