April is usually associated with showers but it’s breaking the mould today as it is set to be the hottest day of the year so far.

With Tuesday’s temperatures already climbing to 20.9C in Santon Downham, Suffolk, Wednesday is set to put that in the shade, with the mercury predicted to rise to 25C in the South East.

At 25C, the temperature is expected to be more than 10C higher than the UK average for the time of year – and a far cry from the recent freezing weather to hit the country.

And this time it’s not just the south that will bask in the sunshine – Newcastle is expected to reach 21C, while temperatures of 19C in Northern Ireland and 17C in Glasgow are also predicted.

Met Office meteorologist Mark Wilson said: ‘It’s going to be a pretty nice day – it will be a slow start in places with cloud first thing.

‘But by mid-afternoon there will be lots of unbroken sunshine.’
