A teacher was assaulted by a former pupil with such brutality that a surgeon said that his facial bones looked like cornflakes ‘which had been stamped on’.

Christian Dawson, 40, was blinded for 24 hours following the attack at the hands of six-foot Lucas Mikoliunas – who attacked him outside a takeaway in Hull.

Mr Dawson recognised the teenager from having taught him – then found him on Facebook and alerted police.

The teenager, now 18, battered Christian as he walked alone in Hull City Centre, a youth court heard.

Mr Dawson, who says the defendant ‘squandered’ his school days, suffered a crushed nose, shattered cheekbones and eye sockets and his jaw needed realigning.

Surgeons warned him there was a chance he could wake up blind – as he need complex surgery to repair his eye sockets.

Mr Dawson, of Hull, East Yorks., said: ‘My jaw had been sheared off, I can still remember my surgeon’s exact words.

‘He said my bones were like a packet of cornflakes that had been stamped on.’

Mr Dawson, who is now teaching at Sirius Academy North in Orchard Park, in Hull, East Yorks., had spent the evening of March 17 this year drinking with a small group of friends.

Mr Dawson’s and Mikoliunas’ paths had first crossed at Sirius Academy West, west Hull, where the teacher was employed for several years until 2015 before he was transferred to his current school.

Speaking about the attack, Mr Dawson told the court: ‘I looked at him in the face and a hand came out and I was hit very hard in the face.

‘It was like a bell was being clanged, then there was a second blow to the side of my face.

‘From that point on I do not have much recollection of the next few minutes at all.’

Mr Dawson later attended Clough Road Police Station for an identity parade and identified Mikoliunas as the person who attacked him.

Mikoliunas, of Hull, denied any physical contact had taken place between him and Mr Dawson.

Mikoliunas was convicted of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following a one-day trial.

Mikoliunas was granted bail and told he may be sentenced at Hull Crown Court, but will attend Hull Youth Court on July 25 for a probation report to be produced.

Speaking after the hearing, Mr Dawson said: ‘This is a young man who has made some awful choices.

‘He’s pleaded not guilty which hasn’t done him any favours and dragged me through the court proceedings.

‘He should get a custodial sentence, but I just feel empty inside.

‘I just want to go to work and get on with my life.’
