Tesco makes Clubcard change after row with Lidl and says 'you may have noticed'

Tesco has rolled out a massive Clubcard change - with a logo shake-up following a row with Lidl. Tesco was locked in a legal wrangle with rival supermarket Lidl, who accused it of ripping off its branding and colour scheme with its Clubcard signage.

Now, Tesco has made a key change, and the new design is a square with two rectangles, and the same classic yellow and blue colour palette. The yellow rectangle features the words “the power to lower prices” while the blue rectangle says “Clubcard Prices”.

Ashwin Prasad, Tesco Chief Commercial Officer said: “You may have noticed that our Clubcard Prices logo has changed, but what has not changed is the power of Clubcard to unlock great value at Tesco, including around 8,000 Clubcard Prices deals every week, on everything from clothing and homeware to ice cream and washing powder.

"We loved seeing our customers’ ideas for the new logo, and that’s why we’ve pulled out some of our favourites to share as the official one launches today.” The High Court ruled last year that the UK's biggest retailer had taken "unfair advantage" of Lidl's distinctive reputation for low prices when it brought in the Clubcard Prices discount scheme.

A Lidl spokesperson welcomed the decision, saying in a statement: "We expect Tesco now to respect the court's decision and change its Clubcard logo to one that is not designed to look like ours." At the time, the UK's biggest grocer Tesco said it planned to update the logo shortly.

Tesco also said it was understood the change would be rolled out within weeks. "We are disappointed with the judgment relating to the colour and shape of the Clubcard Prices logo but would like to reassure customers that it will in no way impact our Clubcard Prices programme," a spokesperson added.
