Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury's shoppers can avoid £51 charge at pump

Drivers have been told they can avoid a £51 charge at the pumps - by switching to alternative fuel. Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Asda motorists, as well as those at BP, Shell, Texaco, Esso and more stations, have been told to "consider" alternative fuel.

In the UK, fuel costs around £1.22 per litre, which works out at £51.24 for a full tank. Switching from filling up with traditional petrol and diesel to alternative fuels is likely to be “more cost-effective” for drivers amid the ongoing Cost of Living crisis.

Personal finance expert Rebecca Bebbington of NetVoucherCodes urged road users across the UK to “explore alternative fuel options”. The expert reckons this could be a simple way to save on the pennies this spring and summer.

However, she urged all motorists looking to take up the fuel to double check vehicles are compatible before use. Speaking out, she said: “Explore alternative fuel options such as LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) or biofuels, which may be more cost-effective than traditional petrol. However, it's essential to ensure that your vehicle is compatible with these fuels and that there are refuelling stations available in your area.”

LPG stands for liquefied petroleum gas and is a type of 'liquid gas' that can be used as fuel for a variety of purposes, including powering cars. Also referred to as butane and propane gas, or autogas in motoring circles it is the by-product of the processing of natural gas liquids as well as the refining of crude oil.

The RAC explains: "While traditionally it was deliberately burnt off and wasted, it’s now recognised as a versatile low-carbon fuel – and used productively." Most petrol cars can be fitted with an LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) conversion, turning them into ‘dual-fuel cars’ that can run on LPG as well as petrol.
