Tottenham legend Alan Gilzean, known as 'The King of White Hart Lane', passes away aged 79

Tottenham icon Alan Gilzean, known as 'The King of White Hart Lane', passed away on Sunday aged 79.

The former striker had in recent weeks been suffering from a brain tumour.

Gilzean spent the early years of his decades-long career playing in Scotland with Dundee before moving to England. He made over 300 league appearances for Spurs.

He won the 1967 FA Cup with Tottenham, Uefa Cup in 1972 and two League Cups. In total, Gilzean made 433 appearances for Spurs, scoring 133 goals.

Former team-mate and fellow striker Jimmy Greaves paid tribute to Gilzean.

"Heartbreaking news today," he wrote on Twitter. "The great Alan Gilzean passed away this morning.

"Sympathy to his family. He was a lovely man and obviously one of the all time Spurs greats."

Gilzean also made 22 appearances for Scotland, scoring 12 goals. He was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame in 2009.
