If you are looking for a place to enjoy a sweet treat in Cardiff, look no further than Urban Chocolatier, which has just opened in Cardiff Bay. Located in Mermaid Quay this dessert shop has pretty much everything you can imagine.

The delicious menu includes freshly made French toast, crepes and pancakes, cookie dough, cakes, and a variety of Belgian waffles, to name a few. We headed down on opening weekend, Sunday, April 28, to try out the extensive menu.

The dessert shop follows a colour scheme of gold and black and is very classily designed. There is velvet booth seating and tables, with fake white blossom trees adorning the restaurant.

Settling down in the comfy booths we perused the menu and were totally spoilt for choice. It really was a chocolate lover's dream, with flavours including Oreo, marshmallows, Nutella, Ferrero Roche and more.

As we went along mid-morning, with the dessert shop getting busier during our stay, we opted for more of their breakfast-style sweet treats, the Oreo delight crepe, which was £9.45, strawberry dream crepe and Bueno bellissimo crepe, both £9.95. Another member of our party went for the Lotus Biscoff French toast which was £10.95.

Urban Chocolatier is also home to an impressive drinks menu including coffee, freak shakes, milkshakes and smoothies. We went for an iced latte, which cost £4.95, fruitopia, a mango and passion fruit smoothie, at £5.50, aplhonso, a mango smoothie, which was £5.50, and a salted caramel gelato shake, which cost £6.95.

The salted caramel gelato shake was deliciously smooth and creamy, it did feel like drinking ice cream. The salted caramel flavour was strong, just the right amount and evenly spread throughout the whole shake.

The iced latte was made using good coffee and the smoothies were tropical and refreshing, with the flavours complimenting each other well, however, they were not very thick and they were a bit more like a tasty fruit cooler. All of the crepes were light and fluffy.

They were perfectly golden, no burned edges here and absolutely packed with toppings. The Oreo crepe was covered in crushed Oreos which added a delicious crunch, and layered with milk chocolate sauce meaning every part of the crepe was covered.

For the strawberry crepe, there was the perfect ratio of strawberries to chocolate sauce, which was milk chocolate and white chocolate, and the Kinder Bueno crepe came with chunks of Kinder Bueno and white and milk chocolate sauce. While the crepes were perfectly sweet they were not sickly making them thoroughly enjoyable.

Each crepe also came with plenty of vanilla ice cream, which was soft, creamy and added a cool kick to the dishes. The French toast came with strawberries and two little cups of Biscoff sauce and Biscoff crumb to pour over the chunky and golden toast.

There was plenty of sauce to enjoy and the toast was sweet, sticky and fluffy. Again this dish was served with plenty of vanilla ice cream as well. For the latest restaurant reviews, sign up to our food and drink newsletter, here.
