UK tourists warned after holidaymaker dies in Majorca 'hours after arriving'

A tourist , 24, has died after plunging 40ft from a Majorca hotel as UK holidaymakers are warned over dangers of balconies amid a spate of deaths. Last month, a Brit tourist was left fighting for his life after falling from a balcony in Magaluf too.

A German man, 24, was killed in the early hours of Tuesday - marking the first fatality of the summer season. The man fell 40ft from his balcony at the Timor hotel in Playa de Palma, hours after arriving for his holiday, according to a newspaper in Germany, his native country.

He was unable to be resuscitated and pronounced dead at the scene, according to local reports. The tourist returned from partying to discover he had locked himself out at around 3am and was attempting to scale the building to reach his room when he fell to his death.

Balconing is the name given in Spain to the act of jumping into a swimming pool from a balcony or falling from height while climbing from one balcony to another, performed by foreign tourists during holidays. In 2010 in Spain, there were six deaths and 11 injuries in falls from balconies which were identified as relating to "balconing" in the Spanish press.

Most of the casualties were young British and German tourists with traces of alcohol in their blood, according to Spanish statistics. Magaluf has been forced to regulate drinking in an attempt to control reckless behaviour, including but not limited to balconing. It has also introduced heavy fines for the practice of balconing, of between €750 and €1,500.
