Knives and drugs have been seized by the police at Huddersfield Bus Station following an undercover police operation.

West Yorkshire Police say the Huddersfield Town Centre Proactive Team (HTCPT) are planning more undercover operations after they launched the operation last week. Officers in plain clothes took part in evening patrols and conducted seven stop and search operations.

Knives and what are believed to be drugs were seized from one man. He was also arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply drugs and weapons offences.

Another person seen acting antisocially was also dealt with by the police through a community resolution.

The police say the HTCPT operate every day throughout the town centre. Alongside the undercover officers, known shoplifters and street drinkers have also been caught.

Inspector Mark Pattinson of Kirklees Police said: “Commuters and residents should be able to go about their business safely and these new patrols are intended to make life difficult for anyone tempted to use the bus station for criminal purposes.

"Our officers could be there at any time and are being deliberately deployed in plain clothes to allow us to monitor and then take action against anyone seen committing offending.

"Our overt high visibility patrols in uniform do of course continue but those thinking of using the bus station to commit any sort of criminal activity should be warned that while they may not see a yellow jacket, it doesn’t mean we aren’t there.”

He added: "The town centre proactive team was formed to target and convict prolific offenders whose offences can affect both businesses in and residents using the town centre day to day."
