Unforgotten viewers react to season 4's tragic finale
This article contains spoilers for Unforgotten series 4.
Unforgotten came to a heartbreaking conclusion last night (29 March), which left viewers devastated and commending lead actor Sanjeev Bhaskar for his "tour de force" performance.
The ITV crime drama saw Nicola Walker's DCI Cassie Stuart die after sustaining brain injuries in her car crash in the penultimate episode. DI Sunny Khan (Bhaskar) is pressured into completing their investigation into the murder of Matthew Walsh, which he resolves.
Sunny rushes to the hospital to be with his dearest colleague and friend, only to discover that she isn't going to recover from her accident.
Cassie's broken father (Peter Egan) replays a voicemail that she left him, in which she vows to be "better". Sunny can then be heard giving a eulogy for Cassie, revealing how he loved her, before we saw him standing solemnly by her grave stone. Each Unforgotten series ends with a cemetery scene, which is meant to signal that the deceased has finally found peace, as their case has been cracked by the crime-solving duo.
Fans were left "bereft" and gutted over Cassie's death, and some even suggested that Nicola Walker should be the next guest star in the Line of Duty. Walker would absolutely nail those tense interrogation scenes.
Viewers also praised Bhaskar for his brilliant performance, and described Walker as a "national treasure."
#Unforgotten really put the UK into an entire heartbroken spiral over Nicola Walker and her career. Hope she knows how loved and praised she is, a national treasure for sure. Always owns the show whether she's on tv, stage, or the radio.

Went to sleep thinking of Cassie, woke up thinking of Cassie. @ChrisLangWriter, Nicola Walker and @TVSanjeev the whole 4 seasons have been outstanding but those last few minutes were utterly stunning, I hope all the awards come your way #Unforgotten

#Unforgotten was excellent last night. Brilliantly written series, giving Line of Duty a hard run for its money. Absolutely ruined me tho. Still not over it. pic.twitter.com/KhKUTt3uWN
