Herts Police have confirmed that an unmarked police car was involved in the smash that caused traffic chaos.

Watford town centre’s roads were heavily congested throughout yesterday afternoon (May 22) with closures in place in the ring road and traffic being diverted down Lower High Street.

It followed a two-vehicle crash in Exchange Road at around 2.33pm.

After pictures from the scene appeared to show one vehicle had no rear licence plates and the other was an unmarked police car, Herts Police have shared more information this morning.

The force confirmed that the collision involved a police car and added that a man in the other car suffered a sprained wrist.

No arrests were made and officers found that everything was in order in terms of the licence plates.

A police spokesperson added that “the incident does not meet the threshold of an IOPC (Independent Office for Police Conduct) referral”.

Herts Fire and Rescue, which had two fire crews nearby that noticed the crash, had previously confirmed nobody was trapped in a vehicle.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said that an ambulance attended and transported one patient to Watford General Hospital “for further care”.
