A group had to be rescued by coastguards after becoming stranded on an inflatable.

The Southport Offshore Rescue Trust were called out to the Southport Marine Lake at around 8.20pm on May 5 after four people became stranded on one the lake's islands. A lifeboat was quickly launched to help the group.

The people were rescued and were taken onboard the lifeboat and dropped off lake-side. A spokesperson for Southport Offshore Rescue Trust issued a warning about the dangers of inflatables.

They said people should wear the correct Personal Protective Equipment when using them.

In a statemen on Facebook, they said: "Our inshore lifeboat, the Christopher Taylor, was tasked by Holyhead Coastguard to assist four people who had become stranded on one of the Marine Lake’s islands.

"The D-Class launched and quickly reached the individuals, who were taken onboard and dropped off lake-side. We would like to remind people of the dangers presented by inflatables.

"While a lake provides a safer environment to use inflatables compared to the sea, it is important to use the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and observe local bylaws. Permission is required to use Southport’s Marine Lake. The use of inflatables at sea are strongly discouraged."
