Weeds are a gardener's nemesis, thriving in almost any condition, and they've been having a field day across the UK recently, thanks to the perfect mix of sunshine and rain. Gardeners have been noticing a surge in these unwelcome plants, but rather than reaching for the white vinegar, salt, or harsh chemicals to tackle weeds sprouting through patio cracks, one green-fingered enthusiast sought advice on a more natural method.

Rachel Roberts took to the Gardening UK Facebook group to ask: "To those of you who use boiling water to kill the weeds growing in the patio, how often and for how long do you do it to see a difference? ".

Fellow members were quick to respond with their experiences, suggesting that boiling water can indeed yield swift results. Helen Brooks shared her insight, saying: "I have found it depends on the weed - most of my patio weeds reacted pretty quickly. I use boiling water on my driveway.", reports the Express.

Rachelle Breakspear recounted her success story: "Poured hot water on the weeds and next day they were burnt to a crisp, then I pulled them out and not seen any since." Sandra Lovett offered her routine: "As soon as you notice the weeds put boiling water on it. I go round every week with the kettle my drives weed-free."

Annie Searle also chimed in: "I check on mine once a week. Each time they regrow the weeds seem to be weaker and take longer to come back." John Gardner advised: "When you see green shoots. Do a weekly 'patrol' during the growing season. They'll die the same day and shrivelled to nothing in a couple more days if you use this. It's an amazing water method."

Jazz Bah responded: "I saw a notable difference the next day. I did mine about a month ago and have not done it since. Dog friendly and I'm not averse to weeds as such, just not on my path."

However, caution is advised as boiling water, while effective against weeds, can also harm valuable plants if misused. It is suggested to utilise a tea kettle with a spout and a heatproof handle when employing this weed-killing technique.

The spout allows for precise targeting of the weeds, while the kettle retains most of the heat. Pour slowly, particularly near grass or ornamental plants that could be damaged. For a more potent approach, gardeners can trim off most of the foliage and treat the roots with boiling water directly in the garden.
