Ep6. Paul and Prue.

The Great British Bake Off has said sayonara to Mark in the contest’s first ever Japanese week – and the show’s 100th episode.

Viewers were thrilled by the theme week’s stunning display of bakes, but ultimately the kawaii cake showstopper proved to be Mark’s undoing with Paul Hollywood labelling his cake “almost inedible”.

Challenges included a signature bake of steamed buns that many contestants chose to present as cartoon animals, a striking technical challenge of a green matcha crepe cake and kawaii, or cute, cakes for the showstopper.

It had looked like Laura was headed for the tent door, but Mark had what Prue Leith termed “a disaster” in the final round with an avocado cake that looked great but apparently tasted revolting.

Hollywood told him: “It’s cruel to say it’s inedible, but it’s getting that way.”

A devastated Mark knew the writing was on the wall, saying: “He used the word inedible.

“On week six of Bake Off, that's not good, is it.”

It’s never a good time to leave the tent, but this week was possibly more disappointing than most because it was Bake Off’s 100th episode, something fans and past contestants were celebrating.

However, there were plenty of triumphs on display at the Japanese week judging table, including Lottie’s “burger” steamed buns and toadstool cotton jiggly cake, Dave’s chicken steamed buns and dog showstopper, and Peter’s near-perfect crepe cake.

Lottie was a well-deserved star baker after producing a showstopper so good that Hollywood said he hadn’t tasted anything like it since he was last in Japan.

Theme weeks on Bake Off can often seem a little random, but viewers fell in love with Japanese week for its adorable character bakes and bright colours.

But watch out for ‘80s week next Tuesday.

The Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
