The semi-finalists of The Great British Bake Off 2020 have been named, following an incredibly close call.

It was a tough week in the tent for almost every contestant as they struggled with the first two challenges, but sadly for Marc, he was the baker chosen to go home.

That leaves Hermine, Laura, Dave and Peter as the final four bakers battling it out next week for a coveted place in the show’s grand final.

Dessert week should have had viewers licking their lips, but instead turned stomachs with a strange choice of challenges including baking Sussex pond puddings - a 1700s recipe incorporating animal fat suet and a whole lemon.

The Sussex pond technical was an unmitigated disaster for all bakers, and many of them also underwhelmed in the signature bake with cheesecakes that either lacked flavour, or were the wrong texture.

Judge Paul Hollywood explained that it all came down to the jelly design cake showstopper because of the disappointing first two tasks.

All of the jelly design cake showstoppers certainly looked spectacular, with jelly flowers, fish and brightly coloured shapes suspended in the top layer of their creations.

However, Marc’s ambitious plans for a two-tiered jelly on top of his cake did not quite go to plan as he got the textures wrong on every layered element of his bake.

Despite dropping her cake, Laura managed an incredible catch that not only salvaged her showstopper but made it one of the judges’ favourites.

But for another week, Hermine bagged Star Baker thanks to her incredible Japanese poppy design suspended in jelly, atop a perfect genoise sponge.

With Bake Off being filmed in a COVID-secure bubble this year, it is likely to have had to make some big changes to the final, which is usually a garden party packed with the contestants’ loved ones.

It’s one of the closest run competitions on the series we’ve seen, so next week’s semi-final promises to be a nail biter.

The Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
