TW Thomas, which has been located in Llansamlet for the last three decades, was originally established as a builders' merchants in 1864. The company shifted focus from builders' merchants in 1994 under David's direction. Having joined the family business straight from school in 1962, David took over as managing director from his father Harry Thomas. During his tenure, TW Thomas flourished, becoming a prominent supplier of building and plumbing materials, bathrooms, kitchens, and fireplaces.

David Thomas is remembered fondly by colleagues and the community alike, having lived in Caswell before his passing. Marcia Smith, a director at TW Thomas, said in remembrance: "He was very much admired in the bathroom industry and known as a man of great integrity and knowledge, winning three national awards as the best in the field, namely marketing in bathrooms in 1999, master bathroom retailer of the year in 2000 and customer service for bathrooms in 2020, all of which he was extremely proud of. David was greatly respected by all of his staff, some of whom have worked for the company for over 44 years. They say he was a good friend as well a wonderful employer and he will be missed greatly."

Away from work, sport, particularly cricket, had always been a significant part of Mr Thomas's life. Marcia recalled: "Until recently David was president of Mumbles Cricket Club, a club that was very dear to his heart. His father Harry purchased and gifted some of the land to the club many years ago and David continued to be a great support to the club in any way he could. This ranged from cutting the grass to helping to oversee the extension to the new wonderful clubhouse."

She also remembered how Mr Thomas's philanthropy made its mark locally, with him supporting numerous charitable endeavours without seeking personal recognition or benefit. She remembered him as "a truly generous and humble man".

David leaves behind his wife Julie, sons Simon and Andrew, and his five grandchildren. His son Andrew, who has been a part of the family business for over 25 years, is set to take the reins. The firm expressed confidence that, under his leadership, TW Thomas would continue to thrive for many more years.

David’s funeral is on July 1 at 12.30pm in St. Peter’s church, Caswell Road, Newton, followed by a 2pm committal at Swansea crematorium, Morriston.
