A diversion route is in place on the A40 after an overnight vehicle fire closed the road. The busy route is closed through Herefordshire, from Whitchurch to the turn off for Monmouth after the incident, thought to be a lorry fire, was reported at around 12am today (Tuesday, April 30).

Emergency services are at the scene for what has been described as a 'complex' vehicle recovery. Drivers have been urged to avoid the area for the time being and morning congestion is beginning to develop in the area.

West Mercia Police said: "A40 in Herefordshire is closed westbound between B4164 (Whitchurch) and A466 (Monmouth) due to a vehicle fire. Please avoid this area."

The A40 remains closed between the B4164 (Whitchurch) and A466 (Monmouth) this morning and National Highways has advised drivers to allow extra time for any journeys made in the area. Diverting traffic should follow the solid yellow triangle sign:

  • From the A40 turn onto the A4137 northbound.

  • Continue on the A4317, northbound to the A49/A4317 junction.

  • Turn left on to the A49 northbound.

  • Continue to the A49/A466 junction.

  • Turn left on to the A466 southbound.

  • Continue on the A466 to rejoin the A40

Highways states: "The A40 in Herefordshire is closed westbound between B4164 (Whitchurch) and A466 (Monmouth) due to a vehicle fire.

"The closure is in place to facilitate the complex recovery of the vehicle. West Mercia police are on scene."
