Wet letter day: Mystery post box appears on Thames

"There are many sightings of a child ghost that walks on the bridge - maybe it was the ghost of a mischievous little girl"...

The mystery letter box going over the River Thames

A village has been left baffled by the appearance of a letter box set into the stonework of a bridge in the middle of the Thames.

The mysterious letter box, which has flummoxed residents and the local postman, appears only to be accessible by boat.

The bright red traditional letter box frontage was spotted only a metre above the water level on the bridge in Sonning-on-Thames.

There has been no explanation from the people of the Berkshire village as to how the letter box appeared in such a bizarre location.

TV psychic Uri Geller, who has lived in the village for thirty years, told The Daily Telegraph: "I have never seen anything like this anywhere in the world, it's a new one on me."

However Geller fuelled the sense of mystery around the appearance of the letter box with reference to supernatural activities. "There are many sightings of a child ghost that walks on the bridge,” he said.

"Maybe it was the ghost of a mischievous little girl."

A spokesperson for Royal Mail, said: "The recent appearance of a postbox frontage on the side of the river bridge at Sonning is a mystery to us.

"It is certainly not an operational posting facility and we have no knowledge of how it arrived at this location."
