Yahoo News 1986 Mercedes 250GD Recalls the G's Early Days
It's easy to forget that the Mercedes Gelandewagen was once a simple, humble off-roader. Years of crazy high-powered luxury models from AMG, Maybach, and elsewhere disguise the G's work-truck past. Thankfully, there are cars like this 1986 250GD on Bring a Trailer to remind us of what the G-Wagen once was.

Today's AMG G63 has a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that cranks out 577 hp. A killer engine, though maybe not the obvious choice for a 4x4. This 250GD has something quite different-a 2.5-liter five-cylinder diesel making around 84 horsepower and 114 lb-ft of torque. It's the same sort of engine you could get in an E-Class in the 1980s, and here, it's connected to a four-speed automatic. And as with every G, power is sent to all four wheels via a locking center differential, and there are locking diffs on the front and rear axles too.
Inside, things are simple too. There are plaid seats, and not much else. Mercedes never intended the G to be a luxury car, and the interior on this one is a reflection of that. It does, however, have two jump seats in the trunk, which you can't say about the new one.
This G was imported from the Netherlands a few years ago, and the listing says it's been subjected to $45,000 (!) of work in the last four years. There's some rust on the body, unfortunately, but the undercarriage looks decent. The speedometer was converted to a miles-per-hour unit in 2015, and the odometer currently shows a little under 40,000 miles.
We think it looks lovely in this very German shade of green, and it's a good reminder of the G-Wagen's past. It's no Four-By-Four Squared, but then again, what is?
Oh, and it has a badges that say "Schnitzel." We're not sure why.
