These Are 7 Beauty Products That Aesthetician Dija Ayodele Swears By

From Women's Health

Dija Ayodele knows a thing or two about beauty. The qualified aesthetician and founder of the Black Skincare Directory is regularly called upon by those in the know for her advice and treatments on all things skin.

From her tips on how to dial down acne, to dispelling myths on the ingredients that darker skintones should avoid ('Glycolic acid is fine for black skin!' she recently declared on her IG,) Ayodele is brimming with beauty advice. Oh and boy, does she know how to get your skin glowing with her treatments. It's no wonder she's been hailed as an 'incredible facialist' by the likes of Caroline Hirons.

Most recently, Ayodele set up West Room Aesthetics in London, a clinic that specialises in beauty treatments for darker skin tones. Of its launch she revealed 'it's a place where women of colour wouldn’t have to question suitability of treatments, products or advice but could relax in the full knowledge that everything on offer was designed and chosen specifically with darker skin tones in mind and their needs were implicitly understood.'

Here she reveals her core skincare advice to WH, plus, scroll on for her 10 top product picks that she considers worthy of a permanent place in her beauty arsenal...

Dija's top 3 skincare tips

1/ Quality over quantity

'Focus on the quality and combination of ingredients to preserve long-term skin health, rather than using a copious number of products in a 10-step routine. Skin is a self-balancing organ and you actually confuse your skin cells when you flood them with ingredient after ingredient for no rhyme or reason. It’s not about the number of products you use, it’s about the ingredient quality and formulation and how you use it that gives you effective skincare results.'

2/ Reach for Vitamin A

Which you might know as retinol. 'It's my skincare negotiable for accelerated cell turnover, exfoliation, collagen stimulation and fading hyperpigmentation. It’s a gold standard ingredient because skin cells have Vitamin A receptors so they understand what it is at a cellular level. This is why it’s so effective at turning around skin health when use correctly.'

3/ Sunscreen is a must for darker skin tones

'There’s a real lack of education when it comes to people of colour using SPF, which is why I set up a sun awareness campaign last year, which Ultrasun supported.'

Dija's 7 hero beauty products

1/ Ultrasun Anti Pigmention Face Lotion SPF 50+ 50ml

'This is brown-skin-friendly– you don’t get any chalky white marks – plus, the formula is lightweight, sits well under make-up and has a clever ingredient called Ectoin, which actively tackles discolouration.'

2/ DHC Deep Cleansing Oil 200ml

'This is a staple for removing make-up and sunscreen. It’s super lightweight and very efficient. A little really does go a long way, which is very good for my pocket in the long run.'

3/ NeoStrata Foaming Glycolic Wash, 3.4 Fluid Ounce

'This is my favourite cleanser and I’ve used it for many years. With 18% glycolic acid, it deep-cleans, exfoliates and brightens my skin very quickly. Left on for a few minutes, it acts as a mask.'

4/ Zelens lip oil

'I can be prone to dry lips, and this luscious oil instantly makes them feel plump and hydrated. My routine can be quite functional, so this adds a certain beautifying element, as it smells lovely and feels very luxe.'

5/ Even Tone Correcting Serum

'I use this every morning to tackle and prevent hyperpigmentation and discoloration.I love the fact that it’s hydroquinone-free, so doesn’t bleach the skin but leaves it brighter and more even.

6/ Osmosis Beauty Advanced Retinal Serum

'This serum contains 0.15% retinaldehyde and is the only product I use on my skin at night. It has additional powerful ingredients, such as niacinamide and beta glucan, to rejuvenate the skin and fade dark marks for a more even complexion.'

7/ FREDERIC MALLE Portrait of a lady eau de parfum parfum

'I love this scent. The blend of Turkish rose, patchouli, benzoin, cinnamon and sandalwood is divine. Every time I wear it, I feel glamorous and sophisticated.'
