7 secret gardens to visit in Norfolk this July

These secret gardens in Norfolk are opening to the public in July 2024 and there is something for everyone.

The National Garden Scheme (NGS) gives visitors access to more than 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands.

It raises money for nursing and health charities through admissions, teas and cake.

These are some of the July highlights in Norfolk and you can pre-book (if required) and find out more information at ngs.org.uk

1. Bishop's House

Where: Bishopgate, Norwich, NR3 1SB

When: Sunday, July 7, 1pm-4.30pm

Price: Adults: £5, children: free

A four-acre walled garden within the historic Cathedral Close, featuring rose beds, a meadow labyrinth, a kitchen garden and a woodland walk.

2. The Walled Garden

Where: Old Hall Road, Little Plumstead, NR13 5FA 

When: Wednesday, July 10: 6pm-8pm

Price: Adults: £10, children: free, pre-booking essential

Richard Hobbs will be running two guided walks, each for 20 people, around this recently restored Victorian walled garden.

3. Salle Park

Where: Salle, Reepham, NR10 4SF

When: Sunday, July 14, 10am-4pm

Price: Adults: £6, children: free

A Victorian kitchen garden with original vine houses, Norfolk Heritage fruit orchard and rose gardens.

4. Lexham Hall

Where: East Lexham, PE32 2QJ 

When: Wednesday, July 17, 11am-5pm

Price: Adults: £8, children: free

Parkland surrounds a historic house (not open), with formal and working kitchen gardens to explore.

5. Gardens in Castle Acre

Where: Castle Acre, PE32 2AN - Egerton House, Highfield House, Ormonde House and Tudor Lodgings

When: Sunday, July 21, 10.30am-4.30pm

Price: Combined admission - adults: £10, children: free

These four delightful gardens vary in planting, size, style and structure, with light refreshments at Tudor Lodgings.

6. Cokesford Farm and Woodford Lodge

Where: Tittleshall, PE32 2RQ/PE32 2PF

When: Sunday, July 28, 2pm-5pm

Price: Combined admission - adults: £6.50, children: free

Cokesford Farm boasts a two-acre farmhouse garden and Woodford Lodge features an acre garden around a 17th-century farmhouse (not open).

7. Dale Farm

Where: Sandy Lane, Dereham, NR19 2EA

When: Sunday, July 28, 10.30am-5pm

Price: Adults: £6, children: free

A two-acre garden with more than 1,000 plant varieties and a large pond.
