Huddersfield Town head coach Andre Breitenreiter admits he needs “time to reflect” before deciding whether to commit his future to the club following their relegation.

The Terriers had their fate sealed on the final day of the campaign on Saturday with a 2-0 defeat at Ipswich Town, who secured promotion to the Premier League with their victory.

Town finished the season second from bottom, on 45 points from 46 matches played, and now face a first campaign at League One level since 2012.

Breitenreiter, who has acknowledged that Town need a “total reset” following their relegation, has said he needs “some days” to decide whether it is a challenge he wants to take on.

“These conversations, we hold the next week. The owner came over to England, so we have some conversations, and then we have to think about the whole thing, about the project,” the head coach told BBC Radio Leeds following Saturday’s game.

“Then I can give you an answer, but not today, because it’s too early after the season. I want to reflect on the last few weeks, and then we decide for the future.

“I appreciate the conversations over the whole time. We stayed very close to each other, with Kevin Nagle, also with Mark Cartwright and Jake Edwards. We handle the things like the last few weeks, we have conversations first private, and speak about every detail, and then I have to decide, and also the club, if I’m the right person for the project. For this, we need some conversations, to experience what is possible next season.

“I need time to reflect. Normally, I’m not the coach for the third league to be honest, I’m used to [playing] international with my teams, but once again I appreciate the conversations. Normally, it would not be the right thing for me to go into the project, but because of many people I appreciate here in Huddersfield, I think about [it].

“For the decision I need some days, [and] the conversations. It’s clear that it needs a total reset, a new start in many, many things, not just on the pitch but also off the pitch. I want to know all the way to change many things.

“First of all, we analyse the whole season, then we have conversations, then the club and all those responsible have to think about me, about the project, about the right person for every position, and then it’s me. I have to speak to my family, to my wife, to my friends, and for sure I have to think about my next step in the career.”

Breitenreiter took charge of the Terriers in February, but was unable to steer them clear of the drop, with the head coach presiding over two wins, five draws and six defeats in the final 12 matches of the campaign.

The Terriers’ boss expressed his disappointment at the club’s relegation. He said: “I’m sad that it was not possible to stay in the league.

“I want really to thank the fans, the supporters, I appreciate the messages I got. It’s not normal when you got relegated that the atmosphere is so positive for my person.

“Sometimes, my feedback is hard maybe, but I’m always honest, and in my opinion it was the right moment to speak very openly [so] that everyone knows that this club needs a new start. This is all what I can say today, and now we go back to Huddersfield and think about the next steps.”

Terriers’ owner Kevin Nagle confirmed following Saturday’s defeat that he had spoken to Breitenreiter on Friday evening, and said the head coach “has a big decision to make” on his future at the club.

“Thanks to all the supporters that made the trip (to Portman Road). Big off-season ahead. Will speak more in detail in the coming days,” the owner posted on X.

“Had a great meeting with Andre last night. He has a big decision to make, and quickly, which I respect.

“A lot of work in front of us and I’m more than ready to get started.”
