BBC acquires Irish crime series Kin with Charlie Cox

The BBC has acquired Irish crime series Kin starring Charlie Cox.

The series made its debut back in 2021, with a second season following earlier this year – though so far UK viewers had only been able to watch on Sundance Now.

It has now been announced that the first eight-part season will be moving to BBC One and iPlayer, with a release date yet to be confirmed.

Kin focuses on local crime family the Kinsellas as they face off against the Cunningham cartel after a boy is killed, with the family holed up in their Dublin stronghold while members and associates are picked off.

"But they have something the cartel does not: the unbreakable bonds of blood and family. They are kin," the synopsis adds.

Alongside Daredevil's Cox, the series stars Spider-Man's Clare Dunne, Game of Thrones' Aidan Gillen and Ciarán Hinds, The Cured's Sam Keeley, Peaky Blinders' Emmett J Scanlan, Outlander's Maria Doyle Kennedy, and Yasmin Seky.

“Anchored by a tremendous cast, Kin is a powerful and intense story of love, grief, family and crime, and its devastating ramifications," said Sue Deeks, head of BBC programme acquisition.

The show comes from The Last Kingdom's Peter McKenna, who created, wrote and serves as showrunner on the series.

Speaking to Digital Spy last year about Kin, Cox praised his fellow cast members, saying: "I was really so impressed with all the other actors, and the family dynamic that we were able to create.

"I remember getting on set with everyone, and being like, 'I believe us as a family. I see it. I see the dynamics. I recognise the people from my own family. I see how they've become like that.' I thought the casting was tremendous on it."

Kin will air on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK. The show airs on AMC+ in the US.
