An imposing three-storey Georgian building in the heart of Gloucester could become fully residential once again after half-a-century. The Grade II-listed building at 58, Eastgate Street was a family home from the early 19th Century to the 1970s.

It then became the Glouceter Medical Eye Centre until 2016 when it was partly converted to flats, with the ground floor remaining in use as an opticians until 2021. It has been empty for three years and despite attempts to find a commercial tenant, there has been no success.

Now, the owner wants to create two flats on the ground floor to make the whole building residential. The building is described as being a Grade II-listed Georgian period house with a 'neo classical front facade'

The house is on the south side of Eastgate Street in the heart of Gloucester. It is next to the former Mecca bingo hall and Eastgate Street sis known for its food and retail outlets, as well as small businesses and residential accommodation on some upper floors.

The opticians was on the ground floor from 2016 to 2021. If the planning permission was granted, the two new flats would bring the number in the building from four to six.

The application says: "This fine Grade II-listed house has a strategic position in the centre of Gloucester offering easy pedestrian access to shops and facilities for convenient and sustainable urban living."
