The Big Bang Theory star Melissa Rauch's show Night Court has been renewed for a third season.

The courtroom comedy, which is a reboot of the '80s series of the same name, centres around judge Abby Stone (Rauch), who presides over the nocturnal shenanigans at a Manhattan arraignment court.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, the show's renewal comes after its second season reached an average 3.73 million viewers in Nielsen's seven-day linear ratings – continuing its streak as NBC's most watched comedy.

Night Court also stars original cast member John Larroquette as former night court district attorney Dan Fielding, as well as One Tree Hill's India de Beaufort, Blindspotting's Nyambi Nyambi and Second Act's Lacretta.

Principal cast member Kapil Talwalkar left the show as court clerk Neil after season one, with TVLine reporting that the show wanted to go in a different creative direction with an emphasis on a wider range of characters.

The sitcom has since featured an impressive line-up of guest stars, including Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Melissa Fumero, Veep's Paul Scheer, former professional basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Rauch's Big Bang Theory co-star Kunal Nayyar.

Night Court became a massive success upon its launch last year, earning the biggest comedy premiere since The Conners on ABC in 2018.

Addressing the show's success, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming's president of scripted content Lisa Katz said: "It's so rewarding to have audiences respond and return to a show in which they have such incredibly warm feelings, and, more broadly it's [a] testament to how broadcast is still a huge driver of communal viewing.

"A huge thank you to our studio partners, a wonderful cast, incredibly talented writers and producers, and a crew that has transformed a lower Manhattan courtroom into a true family."

Night Court airs on NBC in the US. You can now buy the complete Big Bang Theory boxset on DVD and Blu-ray.
