As mentioned, Billions centres predominantly on the cat and mouse game between US Attorney Chuck Rhoades and Bobby "Axe" Axelrod.

For several seasons Axe was able to avoid getting caught in his schemes and was able to become hugely rich off the back of his and his associates work, but this didn't last forever as the show's fifth season saw Chuck finally catch up to him.

The season 5 finale saw Chuck catch Axe in an illegal cannabis deal which meant that he finally had grounds to arrest the hedge fund manager, Axe agreed to a plea deal but in the end he left the US before he could be captured.

In his place came Mike Prince (Corey Stoll), who bought out Axe's company and took his place despite previously appearing to be on Chuck's side.

Season 6 sees Chuck go after Prince, and the series finale saw him learn of how Prince kept an armoured vehicle company from Axe's bank and has been using it to ferry around mysterious black cases.

Chuck manages to procure one with a fake warrant and learns that Prince is using these cases to hide computer drives that have millions in untaxed cryptocurrency on them, which gives him the edge he needs (or so he thinks).

Unfortunately, since Chuck was removed from public office he doesn't have the power he once had, and the illegal means he used to investigate the drives puts him at risk of going to prison while Prince is also accused of tax fraud.

It is later revealed that the drives contained $3.5 billion in cryptocurrency, and Prince decides to sacrifice the money in order to avoid it being used as evidence of tax fraud.

As a result, Chuck is arrested for his use of a fake warrant and gathering evidence under false pretences. However all is not lost as his former mentee Dave reveals she was able to get a court order that legitimised the raid.

Despite the loss, Prince sets his sights ever higher and reveals his intentions to run for the position of President of the United States.

Season 7 will mark the return of Lewis' Axe to the board, and the character is back for one last showdown with Chuck and Prince.

Billions season 7 airs every Friday on Paramount+ and on Sky Atlantic every Saturday.
