A town centre booze ban has the police calling on the public to report people they see drinking alcohol.

An open space near the Guildbourne Centre in Worthing has long been blighted by alcohol-driven antisocial behaviour.

But officers hope to put an end to this with new rules against public drinking.

Members of the public have reported being intimidated, upset or uncomfortable due to someone being intoxicated, and so Sussex Police is telling the public to report anyone they see drinking alcohol.

A spokesman added: "Drinking alcohol can cause people to be abusive, cause damage and be a disturbance which is considered to be antisocial behaviour."

Not everyone is too keen on the ban, however. Ian Silk responded to a Facebook post made by Sussex Police.

He said: "Why should we have to ‘report it’? If it’s a known problem please put a real PC on duty in that area.

"Oh, and nick and prosecute anyone breaking the law."
