Check out what's happening this Canada Day long weekend in Edmonton

Edmonton's reputation as the festival city is kicking into high gear as multiple events are set to take place during the Canada Day long weekend.

Quinn Phillips, communications manager at Explore Edmonton, told CBC News there will be a variety of ways to celebrate summer this weekend.

"We want Edmontonians to make sure that they're getting out there, getting into local businesses, they're continuing to fill those places, because it is important when it comes to creating Edmonton as a tourist destination," Phillips said.

Canada Day

A fireworks show will take place over Edmonton's River Valley parks and the North Saskatchewan River at 11 p.m. on Monday.

The fireworks will be livestreamed by CBC Edmonton.

Phillips said a good view would be from the Alberta Legislature, which will also host a pancake breakfast, then a road race, live performances and kid-friendly activities all-day along.

The Works Art and Design Festival

The Works Art and Design Festival is back in Churchill Square and is North America's largest free outdoor art showcase.

It features larger than life art installations, performances, and hands-on workshops for all ages.

A licensed patio area is also available for adults looking to unwind from the action.

Rice Howard Way

Rice Howard Way in the heart of downtown, already dotted with restaurants and pubs, is a free flow of entertainment on Saturdays.

The city has designated the stretch as an entertainment district from June 1 to Aug. 24 this summer.

The city closes 101A Avenue to vehicles between 100th Street and 101st Street on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

A new bylaw allows local restaurants and bars to sell alcohol to people who can roam inside and outside within the designated borders during those hours.

Enjoying nature

The Edmonton Valley Zoo, Muttart Conservatory and John Janzen Nature Centre will be open on Canada Day.

The zoo will have a variety of activities to celebrate its 65th anniversary.

The conservatory will have a special summer feature pyramid, Where Pyramids Collide, where it will be shown how botanicals were utilized in Ancient Egyptian society. Activities like henna, airbrush tattoos, crafts, and a scavenger hunt will also be available for families to take part in.

It's the start of Super Fly July at the nature centre. Families can discover what kind of insects live in Edmonton by going on a bug hunt and pond dipping for aquatic creatures.

Sports events

The All Africa Soccer Tournament and Festival kicks off a weekend filled with friendly competition, live performances, family activities and local food vendors.

The Africa Centre is hosting the 15th annual event at M.E. LaZerte High School.

The Edmonton Riverhawks will also face-off against the Port Angeles in a baseball game that will also feature a front row seat to view the Canada Day fireworks.

The game will be hosted at the RE/MAX Field.

The post-game party will include performances by Brasstactics and the Canadian classic rock band Giv'r.
