Chinese student caught with knife at Buckingham Palace was on ‘mission to kill the Queen’

A Chinese student who was allegedly caught at Buckingham Palace with a folded knife is said to have told police that he was “on a mission to kill the Queen”.

Hang Zhang, 25, from Sheffield, was sectioned under the Mental Health Act after he was found at the main gate of the palace in London on August 12.

Westminster Magistrates Court heard how Sheffield University student Zhang was “shouting that someone’s trying to kill him” when he arrived at the Queen’s residence.

Prosecutor Edward Aydin told the court that officers saw the words ‘Buckingham Palace’ and ‘flag’ written on his hand in biro.

He said: “He makes a significant comment to the officer saying: ‘My mission is to kill the Queen’ and no comment to all other questions.”

Chinese national Zhang, who has denied possessing an offensive weapon in a public place, was ordered to next appear at a preliminary hearing at Westminster Magistrates Court on October 26.

His trial was set for the same court on December 8.
