Firefighters have urged animal lovers to ensure they have a working smoke alarm after a dog started a house fire by leaping onto a cooker.

Fire crews called to a burning home in Truro, Cornwall, in March, found an empty house except for a pet dog.

After extinguishing the fire they undertook an investigation and believe the family pet accidentally sparked the blaze by jumping on the cooker and turning it on.

Photos issued by the investigation team showed charred remains at the source of the blaze, with a bag of what may be dog biscuits on top.

Crews rescued the pet on 30 March after neighbours heard the smoke alarm sounding.

A spokesperson from Cornwall Fire and Rescue said: "We are urging everyone to make sure they have a working smoke alarm in their home and to turn their cooker off at the switch when they go out, especially if you have pets.

"Please consider isolating your cooker when leaving your property or at night to avoid any accidents with pets happening and never leave any items on your cooker hob."
