Many Emmerdale viewers have voiced their disappointment after soap bosses shared a "nightmare" update on Wednesday.

The long-running ITV soap has amassed legions of loyal fans over its 51 years on air. And the latest instalment of the serial drama has had many of those who watch it talking.

Part of the episode saw Dawn Fletcher spot a new bruise on baby son Evan's leg. She then took him to A&E, where he was examined and the doctor took a blood test.

The doctor later explained Evan is very sick and, having seen his blood test results, asked if he could take an urgent bone marrow biopsy.

After the episode aired, Emmerdale bosses shared a still from the emotional scene on the soap's official Instagram feed. The caption said: "Every parent's nightmare" before signposting to where people in similar situations can get help and advice.

Many fans of the show are clearly unhappy with what has happened, as @primrosehill70_ said: "Can we have a bit of fun back like the old classic shows?" Lynn said: "Omg when is this soap going to have some happy storylines?"

Brenda said: "I've had enough of the misery in Emmerdale. Can't there be at least one happy family."

However, Marina said: "Oh for goodness sake it's a soap depicting REAL LIFE! Every scenario could happen to anyone. It's not Disney! Quit the moaning, it's absolutely fantastic!" @izzys.army1 said: "To all those hating on this storyline please please stop because this very unfortunately happens in real life. Please take the time to see how this affects families' lives".

ITV has been approached for comment.

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7.30pm on ITV and ITVX
