Louise Jameson revealed she has been targeted by so many scams, she even doubted a genuine message from the BBC offering to pay her royalties.

The Emmerdale star - also known for playing Rosa Di Marco in EastEnders - warned she had noticed a surge in fake messages trying to steal her money since she turned 70.

Jameson, 72, told The Mirror: “I will get an email, phone call or text at least once a week trying to tempt me into some scam.

"They could well be algorithms but there are ones that will say things like ‘I’ve got loads of money, can you give me your bank details so I can put it in there.’ Then there are others like ‘Can you move all your money into this account so we can save your current account’."

She went on: “I am suspicious of everything. I even had this thing with the BBC recently. The BBC have changed their method of paying you royalties and they required me to give my bank details even though they already had them on another form.

“I absolutely refused to do it. They had to jump through hoops to persuade me it was the correct way to get royalties. I won’t give away anything unless I am face-to-face in the actual building.”

Jameson - who played Doctor Who companion Leela in the hit sci fi series in the 1970s - joined the cast of Emmerdale in 2022 as Rhona Goskirk's mother Mary.

Her character in the ITV soap is currently the centre of a storyline about scam artists - after donating £20,000 to a fake charity project at the request of her new girlfriend, who then fled with the money.

She said: "Soap is a great place to debate dangerous issues."

Jameson starred in Doctor Who alongside Time Lord Tom Baker between 1977 and 1978.

She played EastEnders' Rosa Di Marco from 1998 to 2000.
