John Stones' sickness bug has reportedly kept him out of England training with the Manchester City centre-back said to be confined to his bedroom.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate has several fitness concerns within his squad ahead of Sunday's opening game against Serbia at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen. Left-back Luke Shaw is a doubt after suffering a hamstring tear in February, whilst Stones was taken off injured in England's final warm-up game against Iceland.

Southgate insisted after the game that the substitution was precautionary. He said: "We think he's probably OK but we didn't want to take a chance given what's coming up.

"[It was] mainly precautionary, he obviously took a bit of a knock to the ankle very early in the game. At half-time there was no point in taking any chance. We're too close to the start of the tournament and there was no point risking it."

But now the 30-year-old looks set to be absent from England's first game of the tournament in Germany according to Sky Sports' Rob Dorsett. It is said that he is being confined to his room in order to prevent a sickness bug from being spread.

Stones has struggled for matches in recent months having made just one Premier League start over the past three months for City. And the centre-back's hopes of getting back on the pitch have been dealt another blow, with England's second group game against Denmark on June 20 a potential return date if he misses Sunday's game.
