Euros 2024: German Police Shoot Man Wielding Axe Near Zone For Dutch Football Fans In Hamburg
A man wielding an axe in Hamburg has been shot by police, according to officials in the German city.
Police confirm they shot the man in the leg, and that the assailant is now receiving medical attention. The BBC reports that the incident, reported to have taken place at 12.30 local time happened on the Reeperbahn, a main street for dining and entertainment – near a fanzone for supporters of the Dutch football team, who will be playing the Polish team in the city later on Sunday.

The BBC reports a police statement saying that the man threatened police officers with a pickaxe and an “incendiary device.” The Sun newspaper reports that the man also threatened football fans.
The area was subsequently sealed off, but thousands of Dutch supporters continue to gather nearby.
